The pre-season tour can be an exciting time when a lot of huge clubs face each other. Arsenal kicked out the pre-season on the 13th of July when they beat Sydney FC 2-0 in Australia. Manchester United started on the 15th of July, crushing LA Galaxy 5-2 in California. Champions Chelsea start off their campaign facing Arsenal in China on the 22nd of July. Liverpool are already underway, beating Tranmere 1-0 and drawing to Wigan 1-1. They now fly off to face Crystal Palace in Hong Kong. The International Champions Cup will be starting on the 19th of July which includes the biggest clubs in the world. Manchester United will play Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona..not easy at all. Everyone plays 3 matches. Whoever does the best out of their 3 matches lifts the cup.
There is also the Emirates cup to look forward to. Formed and hosted by Arsenal, the tournament contains 4 teams and is held in the Emirates stadium in London, Arsenal’s home ground. This will be its 9th year running. Arsenal have unsurprisingly won it the most, 4 times in total. Benfica, RB Leipzig and Sevilla will take part this year. Each team played two matches, with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and a point for every goal scored. In addition, shots on target were taken into account and used to decide the competition winners if teams were level on points and goal difference. Arsenal will have their new singing Alexandre Lacazette, who they signed from Lyon for £45 million.
Euro Women 2017
The women’s European championships begin on the 16th of July to the 6th of August. This will be the competitions 12th edition and it will be held in the Netherlands. The competition will now hold 16 teams instead of only 12. The final will be held in the De Grolsch Veste arena which can host a total of 30,000. As usual there wont be a third place playoff as the two losers from the semi finals receive the bronze medal.
Germany will be the favourites coming into this competition with 8 Euro titles and 5 consecutive since 1997. Sweden are second best with their world class players such as Caroline Seger and Lotta Schelin. They reached the final of the 2016 Olympic Games and they can believe that they can do better this year. France are huge favourites who fancy their chances this time round. They have improved loads in recent years and have got what it takes with Marie-Laure Delie and Gaëtanne Thiney on their side. England face Spain, Portugal and Scotland and are the favourites in the group. The girls will that they have a big chance this season and maybe snatch the trophy off Germany. We will have to hope and wait and see.
Tour de France Final Week
We are entering the final week of the Tour de France and luckily it is still all to play for. Chris Froome is in the lead, but only by a small margin. The pack still have to climb four huge mountains on Wednesday and Thursday, each over 2000m in altitude. The unexpected Landa is lying in 6th and could creep to the top from watching his strength so far. Warren Barguil has the polka dot jersey and is likely to keep it till Paris. He has a good lead. His team is challenging the green jersey, up against Kittel. Kittel has a good lead though but Matthew still has a chance. The Stade Velodrome will host the start and finish of the final time travel. 67000 people are expected to show. They won’t be racing up and down the Champs Élysées this time round.
